California expands largest illicit marijuana eradication effort in U.S.
California’s four-year-old legal marijuana market is in disarray. As a result, the state’s top prosecutor said he would try a broader new approach to destroying illegal pot farms that have crippled the legal economy while causing widespread environmental damage. The state will expand its nearly four-year-old multi-agency seasonal eradication program. It’s the largest in the nation, with nearly a million cannabis plants harvested this year. California will turn it into a year-round effort to investigate who is behind the illegal cultivation. Attorney General Rob Bonta said Tuesday that the new plan will try to prosecute potential labor crimes, environmental crimes and an underground economy centered on illegal cultivation.
Prosecutors drop charges against Adnan Syed in ‘serial’ case
Prosecutors have dropped charges against Adnan Syed for the 1999 killing of Hae Min Lee in a case documented on the hit podcast “Serial” after additional DNA testing excluded him as a suspect. Marilyn Mosby, the state’s attorney for the city of Baltimore, said Tuesday her office will continue to bring justice to Lee, but it has closed the case against Syed, who served 23 years in prison for the killing. She said the decision came after additional DNA testing ruled out Syed as a suspect in the killing of Lee, who Syed was dating. Syed’s case garnered the attention of millions when the first season of Serial focused on it in 2014.
Ex-Texas cop charged for shooting hamburger-eating teen
A former San Antonio police officer was charged last week after he shot a teen eating a hamburger in his car in a McDonald’s parking lot. James Brennand was charged Tuesday with two counts of aggravated assault by a sheriff in the Oct. 2 shooting of 17-year-old Eric Cantu, a police statement said. Cantu remains in hospital in a critical condition, a family lawyer said. Attorney Brian Powers said the teenager was hospitalized on life support to help him breathe, a situation in stark contrast to the description police gave after Friday’s shooting. Brennand was swiftly fired.
UN, G7 condemn Russian attack on Ukraine as possible war crime
The Russian army has carpeted Ukraine with new missiles and ammunition-carrying drones. The bombing came a day after strikes across the country killed at least 19 people and caused power outages across the country. The UN human rights office said the “particularly egregious” attack could amount to a war crime. The leaders of the G7 also condemned the attack and said they would “stand firmly with Ukraine if necessary”. Their pledges ignore Russian warnings that Western aid will prolong the war and the suffering of the Ukrainian people. The Russian attack was in retaliation for a weekend explosion that damaged a bridge linking Russia and the Crimean peninsula.
Western pressure mounts to speed up air defenses against Ukraine
Senior NATO officials on Tuesday called on allies to boost weapons supplies to Ukrainians, especially advanced air defenses, a day after Russia carried out rocket attacks on 19 Ukrainian cities. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Ukraine would be better able to deter them if their existing weapons were expanded. Stoltenberg’s remarks came as Western leaders convened a virtual emergency meeting of the group of seven major industrialized nations. They pledged “unwavering” financial and military support for Ukraine. The White House also said it would expedite the delivery of advanced air defense systems.
Coronation of King Charles III scheduled for May 6
Buckingham Palace announced on Tuesday that King Charles III and his wife, Queen Camilla, will be crowned at Westminster Abbey on May 6, the UK’s first coronation in seven years, compared with a lavish ceremony for the queen. The coronation will be greatly scaled back to Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Charles is expected to shorten service hours, reduce guest lists and cancel some of the more dated ceremonies, a person familiar with the palace’s planning said. The changes reflect the tightening cost of living plaguing the UK and the king’s long-term push for a leaner royal structure.
