Stockton, California police arrest serial murder suspect

Human rights group: 59 lawyers killed in Philippines in 6 years
At least 133 lawyers have been killed in the country since the 1980s, nearly half of them during the past six years of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s presidency, a Philippine human rights group said. Harassment of lawyers and judges continues under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who took office in June, the National Union of People’s Lawyers said Saturday. Last year, the Supreme Court made a rare public condemnation of the growing number of killings and threats against lawyers and judges, and asked lower courts, law enforcement officials and lawyers’ groups to provide information on such attacks over the past decade in order to take pre-emptive steps. Most of the killings remain unsolved, although activists have blamed dozens of attacks on the country’s military.
