Pelosi holds open option for re-election as House Democratic leader
With control of the House still up in the air, Speaker Nancy Pelosi has remained mum on her future plans. But she said her congressional colleagues are pressing her to seek re-election as Democratic leader after a strong showing in the midterm elections. Pelosi said on Sunday’s news program that Democrats are “still alive” to win the House and that she will decide in the coming weeks whether to run for House leadership. Pelosi said her decision will be influenced by her family, “and my colleagues,” after her husband was attacked last month. She pointed to the need to move forward “in a very unified way” ahead of the 2024 presidential campaign season.
Trump wants IRS to investigate enemy, top aide says
During his tenure, President Donald Trump repeatedly told his second White House chief of staff, John F. Kelly, that he wanted the IRS to investigate some of his perceived political enemies, Kelly said. Kelly said Trump’s request was part of a broader pattern of his attempts to use the Justice Department and his power as president against his critics, including seeking to revoke the security clearances of former senior intelligence officials. Among those Trump said “we should investigate” and “get the IRS on” were former FBI Director James B. Comey and his deputy Andrew G. McCabe, Kelly said.
A 10 year old child tattooed. His mother was arrested.
Last month, a 10-year-old boy walked into the nurse’s office at his elementary school in Heights, New York, and asked for some petroleum jelly. He wanted to have it on his new tattoo – his name in capital letters on the inside of his forearm. The nurse called the police. The boy got his neighbor’s tattoo with his mother’s permission. Some states do not have a minimum age to accept a tattoo if parents allow it, but New York State prohibits anyone under the age of 18 from getting a tattoo with or without parental consent. Last month, tattoo artist Austin Smith, 20, and the boy’s mother, Christo Thomas, 33, were both arrested.
How Mexico’s Drought Affects the Future of the Beer Industry
As droughts get worse around the world, brewers have become at the center of Mexico’s climate battle. Heineken, Anheuser-Busch InBev and Constellation Brands all operate factories in northern states that take advantage of their proximity to the United States. Overall, Mexican brewers sold more than $5 billion worth of beer abroad last year, making Mexico the world’s largest beverage exporter, according to the World Bank. In July, however, 8 of Mexico’s 32 states experienced moderate to extreme drought. In response, Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador said in August that he would end beer production in the north and ship it to the more water-rich south.
Kherson celebrates Russia’s exit but faces huge rebuild
Residents of Kherson celebrated for the third day in a row the end of Russia’s eight-month occupation of the southern Ukrainian city. However, despite their euphoria, the authorities are still assessing the huge losses left by the retreating Kremlin forces. A jubilant crowd gathered on Kherson’s main square on Sunday, even as the roar of artillery fire could be heard in the distance as Ukrainian troops continued their advance to drive out Moscow’s invading forces. However, Kherson still lacks electricity and running water, as well as food and medicine. Residents said Russian troops plundered the city and took their booty with them when they pulled out last week.
Bomb Rock Avenue in central Istanbul; 6 dead, dozens injured
A bomb hit a bustling pedestrian street in central Istanbul, killing six people and wounding dozens more. Panicked people fled the violent explosion or crowded into cafes and shops. Emergency vehicles arrived at the scene on Istiklal Avenue. It is a popular avenue lined with shops and restaurants leading to the iconic Taksim Square. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the blast a “treacherous attack” and said its perpetrators would be punished. He did not say who was behind the attack, but said it had a “smell of terror” without giving details. Turkey suffered a series of deadly bombings between 2015 and 2017.
