Respect marriage law climate, pollution

Legislation protecting marriage equality at the federal level, the Respect for Marriage Act, passed the U.S. House of Representatives and was introduced in the U.S. Senate, where it is expected to pass easily. The revelation of secret negotiations on the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act has halted progress on the RMA. The RMA supporter, Senator Susan Collins, said the secret negotiations that led to the passage of the IRA could spell doom for the Respect for Marriage Act. Collins said the bipartisan spirit that led to the gun safety legislation and the microchip bill “undermined many bipartisan efforts that were going on.”

Reinterpretation of Title IX launches lawsuit

The U.S. Department of Education announced proposed changes to the legal interpretation of Title IX of the U.S. Civil Rights Act. The interpretation changes the previous administration’s rules to more strongly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and changes due process in college sexual assault investigations. Florida has directed the state’s public and private schools to ignore the new rules. Other states are expected to follow Florida’s lead. The problem is that the DOE recommends withholding federal funding for school lunch programs and other school programs if states have any restrictions on gender identity expression or transgender participation in any school program, such as women’s track and field. So far, 20 states have joined the lawsuit to stop defunding school lunches. In these cases, no one can prove it except a lawyer.

Wisconsin school district denies flags and pronouns

A Wisconsin school district announced a policy prohibiting faculty members from “using their positions to promote partisan political, religious views and propaganda for personal, monetary or non-monetary gain.” The effect of this policy is to prohibit the display of gay pride signs (or any non-government-issued sign) in classrooms or where teachers place their favorite pronouns in email signatures. Students, alumni and others protested the policy, but district officials said it was a reiteration of a policy already in place.

Chuck Norris inspires Hungarian PM

The Conservative Political Action Conference heard anti-LGBTQ+ and pro-Christian rights rants from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. He argues that Europeans face the threat of being “mixed” as if they were not already “mixed.” He was encouraged by calls for a ban on same-sex marriage, LGBTQ+ content accessible to minors, and legal recognition of transgender identities. “We decided we didn’t need more sex [and need] Less drag queens, more Chuck Norris,” he claimed.

Obergefell wants to go to Washington, again

Jim Obergefell, whose landmark U.S. Supreme Court case legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, is running for the Ohio State Capitol. He, a Democrat running on the “Rodney King Platform,” said in his statement, “It really just boils down to: Can’t we get along and treat each other like people? We just can’t be decent. Who?” Obergefell went unopposed in the Ohio primary, where he will fight Republican incumbents for a seat in the eastern part of the state.

Monkeypox advice

Recommendations from health authorities, including the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, for people at risk of contracting monkeypox are to consider reducing the number of sexual partners. The UN health agency said monogamy or social distancing was “temporarily”. Since the outbreak of monkeypox in May, 98% of monkeypox cases have occurred among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, the WHO said. The CDC has issued 11 guidelines, the equivalent of “cool your jet.” Two notable guidelines recommend masturbating within a six-foot distance. It also recommends “virtual sex without face-to-face contact”. Anyone can contract monkeypox through skin-to-skin contact or even sharing household linens, the CDC and others say, and it’s not an STD. WHO also condemns any stigmatizing violence against monkeys.

Turing Memorial

Alan Turing was a British codebreaker in World War II who contributed to the defeat of Nazi Germany and played a major role in the development of modern computers. He was also gay when it was illegal in the UK. Turning, the protagonist of the movie The Imitation Game, committed suicide after being convicted of homosexual crimes that led to imprisonment and chemical castration. He was posthumously pardoned in 2013. A 12-foot statue was commissioned to be placed in the courtyard of King’s College, Oxford, which has sparked controversy. First, the academy will charge people to see the statue. Local officials want the statue to be placed on public roads. King’s College said the on-campus placement would be disruptive and said the viewing fee would reduce traffic. Second, it is not a portrait of a man, but a sculpture in a modern style. Critics say the sculpture’s abstract design, while not a whale in traffic circles, would look out of place in the Gothic architecture of King’s College.

Another bad card for Kevin Spacey

Unable to get a better deal, Kevin Spacey failed to overturn a court ruling that ordered him to pay nearly $31 million to the studio behind the Netflix series “House of Cards.” The production company is making up for lost revenue after Spacey’s rude demeanor caused the series to crumble like a house of cards. The first card withdrawn from Spacey’s career was actor Anthony Rapp’s 2017 “Me-Too” accusing Spacey of sexually teasing him in 1986. Spacey has since been accused of unwelcome sexual advances by various other grips, bartenders and reporters. Some charges and lawsuits are dropped, others settled, and some forgotten. Still, Spacey’s career was in the hands of the dead.

Cabin Repubs Lower

One question no one has asked but us is, “Do log cabin Republicans want to be so ridiculous that they don’t matter”? In a report filed on Twitter, the NLCR compared the recent FBI search of Mar-a-Lago to the 1969 police raid on New York City’s historic Stonewall Inn, which is now protected by federal ancient law. “Just as Stonewall’s customers are not intimidated by the police, we are not intimidated by the weaponization of the FBI and DOJ,” the NLCR said in a troll tweet. NCLR pledges to continue planning for annual Mar-A-Largo event. The ill-advised hot topic came after the FBI executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago, Florida. The search was condemned by conservatives, while liberals backed down.

Rest in Peace Elana Dykewomon

Famed lesbian author and activist Elana Dykewomon has died of cancer at the age of 72. Dykewomon wrote about lesbian life in his coming-of-age story, “Riverfinger Women,” published in 1974. “Beyond the Pale,” published in 1997 about Jewish lesbian immigrants’ participation in the fight for social change in early 20th century New York City. New York Times‘ List of the 100 Greatest Gay Novels and Beyond Pale, a lesbian novel that won the 1998 Lambda Literary Award. Dykewomon also writes poetry and essays, including the 2017 collection, The American Lesbian Express. She was originally named Elana Nachman, but changed her name to not be defined by men. “I chose ‘Dike’ for strength and ‘Woman’ for alliance.” Her play “How to Let Your Love Die,” about the death of her longtime partner, is scheduled for this year’s Bay Area play in California Writer’s Day.

Love and Marriage in America (living happily together)

The U.S. Census Bureau extrapolated the census data. The current American Community Survey shows that nearly 63 million married and 17 million unmarried couples live in the same household in the United States. According to the survey, about 1 million same-sex couples live in a married or unmarried state, including about 600,000 same-sex marriages and 400,000 unmarried families. Most of the “same-sex couple” U.S. residents in the survey identified as women.

‘Fear’ marketing is now a Texas thing

Using fear as a marketing tool to get listings and recommendations may not be cowardly in a tight-stock “buyers” real estate market. However, a Dallas real estate agent has set up a website called “Escape Texas” to appeal to LGBT people who are afraid of living in Texas. The website offers to help LGBTQ+ homeowners leave the Lone Star State, stating: “As LGBTQIA+ citizens of Texas, many of us feel at risk. If you feel compelled to leave Texas jurisdiction, let us help you sell your property here and connect with an LGBTQIA or ally agent in a better location of your choice.” The visibly frightened agent said, “A lot of people don’t remember what it’s like to be an unlawful person. …I’ve been in Texas since 1987, and I’ve seen this state become dominated by right-wing conservatism.”
