Covid-19: 7 deaths after Colombian variant outbreak in Belgian nursing home-News

[ad_1]

So far, scientists don’t know whether the Colombian variant is more spread than other variants.

The virology team that conducted the test said on Friday that seven residents of a nursing home in Belgium died after being infected with the Colombian variant coronavirus, even though they had been vaccinated.

A variant of Covid-19 or B.1.621 that originated in Colombia has been discovered in the United States in recent weeks, but cases in Europe are rare.

According to Marc Van Ranst, a virologist at the University of Brussels, the seven people who died in the nursing home in the Belgian town of Zaventem near Brussels were all in their 80s or 90s, some of them ‘S physical condition is already very poor. The University of Leuven tested the strains found in the nursing home.

“This is worrying,” Van Lanster said, commenting on the fact that residents died despite being vaccinated against Covid-19.

He said that so far, scientists don’t know whether the Colombian variant is more spread than other variants.

He said that in Belgium, the variant currently accounts for less than 1% of known COVID-19 cases, compared to 2% in the United States and even higher in Florida.

Van Ranst told Reuters that in the nursing home in Zaventem, 21 residents and several staff were infected with this variant. The infected employees have only mild symptoms.

Van Lanster said that in Belgium, the main coronavirus variant with an infection rate of about 95% is Delta, first found in India, followed by Alpha, which was previously dominant in the UK.

Van Lanster said that additional tests will be conducted on Friday to rule out the possibility that residents of nursing homes will die from different virus variants or different respiratory diseases.

“It’s unlikely, but it’s not impossible,” he said.
