Covid-19: Australian states are fighting delta outbreak-News

[ad_1]

More than 5 million people on the coast of Sydney have been locked down for six weeks.

Australia’s three most populous states, New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, reported a total of 282 new local infections of Covid-19 on Sunday, and the authorities are working to quell the Delta variant outbreak.

New South Wales has reported 262 new cases, which is lower than the pandemic high of 319 on Saturday. The population of Sydney’s coastal area has exceeded 5 million and has been locked down for six weeks.

New South Wales Governor Gladys Berejiklian (Gladys Berejiklian) said: “I urge everyone to follow the rules and health advice and only leave home when absolutely necessary.”

A woman in her 80s died overnight, bringing the total number of deaths in the current epidemic to 28.

There are 362 people hospitalized in New South Wales, 58 of whom are in the intensive care unit. Of the people in the intensive care unit, 54 were not vaccinated.

Neighboring Victoria has reported 11 new local cases of coronavirus as the state is still under a strict seven-day lockdown that was implemented earlier this week.

Queensland has recorded 9 new local cases. Some areas of the state will be lifted on Sunday. However, after reports of unknown cases, the City of Cairns re-implemented a three-day lockdown.

As the highly disseminated delta variant plagues Australia’s east coast, states have adopted the “work hard, act early” rapid lockdown method recommended by the federal government last week until at least 70% of the population is vaccinated.

So far, only about one-fifth of people over the age of 16 have received a comprehensive vaccine, mainly due to the insufficient supply of Pfizer vaccine and the public’s anxiety about AstraZeneca’s vaccine.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said on Sunday that he expects to receive the millionth dose of Moderna vaccine in September.
