Covid-19: Harris thanks Modi for resuming vaccine exports-News

[ad_1]

Modi emphasized that India and the United States are “natural partners” when meeting Harris

US Vice President Kamala Harris met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday and welcomed India’s decision to resume Covid-19 vaccine exports and said the two countries must work together to protect democracies around the world.

India, the world’s largest producer of new coronavirus vaccines, announced this week that it will resume vaccine exports later this year. With the outbreak of infection, India stopped exports in April to focus on vaccinating its population.

Harris said: “When India experienced the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, the United States was very proud to support India’s need and responsibility to vaccinate its people. I welcome India’s announcement that it will resume vaccine exports soon.”

Narendra Modi and Kamala Harris held a delegation-level meeting at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building near the White House.

“The United States, like India, is very proud of being a member of the Indo-Pacific region, but it also feels very strong about the fragility and importance of these relationships, including maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” Harris said during the meeting. Tell Modi the meeting.

For the 4 million Indian expatriates in the United States and the Indians returning home, this meeting is also a time of celebration. They are proud of Harris’s Indian ancestry and her rise.

Modi praised the vice president for calling her an “inspiration”, a leader like a “family”, and calling her a “true friend” for the support of India during the Covid-19 crisis.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized at the beginning of the meeting with Harris that India and the United States are “natural partners”. The two countries share similar values and geopolitical interests. “Our coordination and cooperation are also increasing.”

“The oldest democracy and the largest democracy… We are indeed natural partners, we have similar values,” Modi said.

“The vibrant and strong civil ties between India and the United States are the bridge between our two countries, and their contributions are commendable,” he added.

In early June of this year, Prime Minister Modi and Harris had a telephone conversation to discuss the United States’ global vaccine sharing strategy and the four-party vaccine initiative to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier in the day, Modi met with Kamala Harris, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and held a meeting with five global CEOs to discuss potential investments in India. These talks are part of a series of meetings he held with heads of selected companies that have the potential to make substantial investments in India.

Modi’s three-day trip to Washington will end with a meeting with President Joe Biden at the White House on Friday.

Biden will host the first face-to-face summit of leaders of the four countries in history. Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will also attend.

Modi’s trip to the United States will end on September 25. He will deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly, focusing on urgent global challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the need to fight terrorism, climate change and other important issues.
