Except for people with low immune function, all groups should receive the third injection at least six months after the second vaccination
A person familiar with the matter told Reuters that the Italian drug agency AIFA approved a third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine for vulnerable groups in the population on Thursday.
The agency approved so-called booster shots for those who might be less protected from the traditional two-dose vaccination program—people with weakened immune systems, people over eighty years of age, and residents of nursing homes.
It is also approved for frontline health workers who are frequently exposed to the virus.
According to AIFA’s recommendations, all groups except the immunocompromised group should be given the third injection at least 6 months after the second injection, and those with immunocompromised should be injected 28 days later.
Now, this will be passed on to the Ministry of Health, which is expected to be rubber stamped in the next few days.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said earlier this month that it is evaluating a potential booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, which may be administered six months after the second vaccination.
The World Health Organization has called for the suspension of the Covid-19 booster injections until at least the end of September to provide more doses for people in countries where it is difficult to obtain the vaccine.
