Like many countries, Japan has been trying to control the spread of the highly contagious delta variant.
Japan’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Nishimura, said on Tuesday that as the number of new coronavirus cases drops and the pressure on the medical system eases, the Japanese government will seek the approval of consultants to lift the state of emergency in all regions on October 1.
If approved by the government advisory group, Japan as a whole will leave the state of emergency for the first time in nearly six months. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will hold a press conference at 7 pm (10:00 am GMT) to announce this decision.
Although the government plans to end the state of emergency on September 30 as originally scheduled, Nishimura stated that some restrictions on bars and restaurants should continue to be implemented for about a month to prevent a recurrence of cases.
Now, in an emergency, restaurants in the county must be closed before 8pm and no alcoholic beverages are served. Nishimura said that the government has proposed a certification system that only approved restaurants can be open until 9 pm, but unless the prefectural governor orders otherwise, everyone will lift the alcohol ban.
“After the state of emergency is lifted, new cases will undoubtedly increase,” Nishimura, who is also in charge of Japan’s coronavirus response, said at the beginning of the meeting with the advisory group.
“We need to continue to take the necessary measures to prevent backlash,” he said.
Like many other countries, Japan has been trying to control the spread of the highly contagious delta virus — including through the Summer Olympics — putting most of the country under emergency restrictions.
However, according to the Minister of Health, the number of new cases per day has steadily declined in the past month, dropping to 1,128 nationwide on Monday, a decrease of nearly half from 2,129 on Sunday, and also lower than the peak of about 25,000 cases. Daily highs.
Nearly 60% of the population has been fully vaccinated, and the government stated that all people who want to be vaccinated will be vaccinated by November.
