Covid-19: Vietnam opens holiday islands to foreign tourists who are vaccinated-News

[ad_1]

Phu Quoc Island, with its white sandy beaches, mountains and dense jungle, will host international tourists later this year

Authorities said that Vietnam plans to reopen the resort Phu Quoc Island in late November to foreign tourists who have been vaccinated because the country hopes to restart tourism after it has been closed for nearly two years.

Phu Quoc Island is located in the Gulf of Thailand about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from Cambodia. It has white sandy beaches and clear waters, as well as mountains and dense jungles.

In 2019, it attracted about 670,000 tourists and earned more than 18 billion U.S. dollars in income from international tourists. The authorities hope to turn it into a tourist destination in Phuket, Thailand or Bali, Indonesia.

The government said on Friday evening that from November 20, it would welcome “charter flights” of international passengers with vaccine passports to enter the island.

After that, from the end of December to the end of March, the island’s goal is to receive up to 5,000 foreign tourists via similar chartered flights.

Visitors are required to show a vaccine certificate and a negative Covid-19 test result before being allowed to enter.

According to the authorities, they should come from “places with a high safety record in Covid-19 prevention, such as certain areas in Europe, the Middle East, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, North America, and Australia.”

Due to the low vaccination rate among residents, the previous plan to open Phu Quoc Island to international tourists in October was abandoned.

However, after months of lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, this Southeast Asian country is eager to revive its economy.

Since the beginning of last year, its borders have been closed to international tourists and almost no commercial flights enter the country.

According to official media reports, the authorities also hope to open popular destinations such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Halong Bay and the ancient town of Hoi An to foreign tourists in November, but they have not yet formulated a clear plan.

Vietnam has reported more than 880,000 Covid cases and approximately 21,500 deaths. Of its 100 million population, less than 20% are fully vaccinated.

Thailand announced that it will allow vaccinated travelers from more than 40 countries to enter the kingdom on November 1 without being quarantined.
