Fever and emergency hospitalization for COVID-19 in the country have peaked and the number of hospitalized patients with the novel coronavirus continues to decline, Chinese health officials said on Saturday.

Nationwide, “the number of fever clinic visits in both urban and rural areas showed an overall downward trend after the peak,” Jiao Yahui, an official with the National Health Commission, said at a news conference.

The number of emergency room patients is also down, Jiao said, and the percentage of patients who test positive for COVID-19 is also steadily declining.

She added that the number of severe cases has also peaked, but remains high, with patients mostly elderly.

Wen Daxiang, an official with the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, said China will strengthen health monitoring and management of high-risk groups.

He added that China will boost the supply of medicines and medical equipment, as well as strengthen training for grassroots medical staff to fight the coronavirus in rural areas.
