Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer opened with a whopping $22 million, including $5.45 million from previews earlier this week. The “Rocky” spinoff, which aired in 4,007 locations, is now projected to gross more than $50 million, beating the original estimate of $30 million for the show. It will also mark the three-day premiere of all “Tenet” films and the entire “Rocky” franchise, beyond the first “Tenet” ($29 million) and its 2018 sequel ($35 million).

The film’s popularity was boosted by stellar reviews, with a 92% rating from top critics on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Audience response was also encouraging, with an “A-” rating from research firm Cinema Score, indicating high enthusiasm among first-round ticket buyers. The positive reception for Tenet III should help in the coming weeks, as the film looks likely to justify its $75 million production budget.
Beyond its own success, “Tenet III” marked a triumph for theaters, with MGM’s new owner, Amazon, re-embracing theatrical distribution and scoring the company’s highest-ever opening weekend.

The series’ predecessor, “Demon Slayer: The Movie: Infinity Train,” was one of the few bright spots in early 2021, which has struggled at the box office due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Its North American opening weekend grossed $19.5 million in May, a record for a non-English-language feature debut. Its $47.7 million domestic take took it to a staggering $506.5 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film worldwide of 2020. Despite the film’s positive “B+” rating on Cinema Score, fans don’t seem to be too enthusiastic about the film.
