Critical Role, the company that adapted its popular and long-running Dungeons and Dragons live event into the animated series “The Legend of Vox Machina” on Prime Video, has completed its first acquisition.
Metapigeon, the development and production company behind Critical Role, has announced the acquisition of the podcast “Midst,” described as a semi-improv audio drama. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

As part of the acquisition, Metapigeon is continuing to expand the “Midst” brand in partnership with the podcast’s three founders, Third Person. According to a representative for Critical Role, the podcast’s founder prefers to remain anonymous.
Set in the “space western” town of Stationary Hill on the desert planet Midst, “Midst” tells the story of three main characters – an eccentric outlaw, a struggling cultist and a diabolical bastard – as their paths take on meaningless Intersect in unexpected ways. According to Critical Role, the story is narrated by “three unreliable, jokingly omniscient and completely anonymous narrators,” who speak to all characters in a “turbulent, present-tense, stream-of-consciousness style.” Dub.
With this acquisition, Critical Role will re-release the first two seasons of “Midst,” featuring remastered audio and new video versions of each episode. Each episode features at least one original work of art from artists including Ricardo Bessa, Lenka Simeckova, Sam Bosma, Artem Chebokha, Lap Pun Cheung and Will Kirkby.
Additional seasons of “Midst” are in the works, Critical Role says.

The first three episodes of the newly produced “Midst” series will be released for free on Critical Role’s YouTube channel on April 11, 12 and 13, each featuring animated illustrations. The episodes will also be available in audio format via Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts. Future episodes will be released every Wednesday at 5AM PT.
Through the “Midst” website (Intermediate company) for $2.99/month or $29.99/year to watch the first five episodes on April 11, and follow-up episodes two weeks earlier. Subscriptions provide an ad-free experience and access to each episode’s bonus content, such as documents, items, and artifacts in the story world.
Critical Role started in 2012 as a private D&D game night for a group of friends in Los Angeles, who were all voice actors. Since then, it’s branched out into a variety of businesses, including “The Legend of the Voice of the Machine” on Prime Video, which has run for two seasons and has a third in the works.Earlier this year, the Critical Role signed a multi-year Exclusive overall TV and first-run movie deals with Amazon Studios and announced that “Mighty Nein,” adapted from CR’s second campaign, is the first new series to be produced under the deal.
