Crowdsourcing research and development of advanced thermal imaging algorithm

ABU DHABI – UAE: The Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the global research center and applied research pillar of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council, has launched a crowdsourced competition ‘Infrared Tracking Challenge’ through its Autonomous Robotics Research Center (ARRC) to develop Algorithms to process and interpret information from thermal imaging sensors.

Autonomous ground vehicles are able to understand their environment by applying deep learning-based algorithms on top of the perception information acquired from sensors. However, at night, due to low light, using a standard RGB imager is insufficient. One solution is to use thermal imaging sensors, which capture heat data instead of light.

TII is using this crowdsourcing competition to discover machine learning-based solutions that can detect, track and re-identify objects in the dark using only thermal information. The challenge is open to innovators, startups, research institutions and university students, and winning entries will receive a total of $75,000 in prize money.
