Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has begun a scheduled official visit to Malaysia, which should last until May 24.
The crown prince departed the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, May 21, and landed at the Bunga Rama complex at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, where he was greeted by Pahang Crown Prince Hassanal Ibrahim and Malaysia’s foreign minister.
Sheikh was then escorted through a guard of honor comprising members of the 1st Royal Rangers of the Malaysian Army.
His Highness was accompanied by a high-level delegation that included the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development.
The Sheikh is also expected to meet the king of Malaysia and pay a courtesy visit to the prime minister, although much of his trip will focus on the main points on his agenda.
These points include mutual cooperation, further strengthening of bilateral relations and relations between the two countries, mutually beneficial trade and energy.
The two countries’ ties go back decades, with the Malaysian embassy in Abu Dhabi opening in 1983, followed by the UAE embassy in Kuala Lumpur in 1995.
Since then, officials at various levels of the two countries have exchanged visits many times. The last trip was only a few months ago, when the King of Malaysia traveled to the UAE for a state visit.
This is the second visit in three months; in December 2022, the King of Malaysia visited Abu Dhabi to witness the signing of an important oil agreement between the two countries.
Other linkages between the two countries include trade, with the UAE being Malaysia’s second largest trading partner and export destination, with trade rising 73% from MYR 22.33 billion (or close to US$5 billion) to MYR 38.73 billion ( or just over $8 billion).
Another key point in this relationship is tourism, with many Emiratis flying to Malaysia each year for travel and study reasons – the most popular pathways being management, accounting and law.
This is Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s first visit to Malaysia since his appointment as Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi; his predecessor, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, the current president of the UAE, attended in 2019 Coronation of the King of Malaysia.
