Zongo said the curfew would help the army in the region bordering Mali, where an insurgency swept through in 2015.

A curfew was also imposed in Koulpelogo province in March, according to an administrative bulletin from the High Commission of Ghana and Togo.

In mid-February, the eastern region’s overnight curfew, enacted in 2019, was extended by three months to May 21.

Attacks by militants have increased this year, killing dozens of civilians and members of the security forces every week.

The military announced the provisional death toll of 51 people in an ambush on February 17 in the far north, which was claimed by the Islamic State group.

It was the deadliest attack in Burkina Faso since army captain Ibrahim Traore seized power in a coup in late September last year.

About 40 percent of the country’s territory is outside government control.

Anger within Burkina Faso’s army led to two coups last year that failed to bring the rebellion back.
