Authorities in the UAE are prepared for any possible emergencies due to Tropical Cyclone Biparjoy that formed in the Arabian Sea earlier this month. According to the National Center of Meteorology (NCM), the cyclone is currently moving north and northeast towards the coast of India and Pakistan and will not affect the UAE for the next five days.

Who named the whirlwind?

Bangladesh named the cyclone Biparjoy, pronounced Biporjoy. Meaning calamity or catastrophe in Bengali; Biparjoy is one of the new names adopted by member states in 2020, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Tropical cyclones are named for easy identification in warning messages.

The Origin of Cyclone Biparjoy

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning on June 5 that a cyclone circulation is forming over the southeast Arabian Sea, and an area of low pressure may appear in the region in the next 24 hours. The department had predicted that the cyclonic circulation would “move almost northward and intensify over the next 48 hours into a low pressure over the southeast and adjacent to the east-central Arabian Sea”.

Nearly a day later, the IMD announced that the depression developed into a deep depression before intensifying into Cyclone Bipajoy over the central-eastern Arabian Sea.

Biparjoy intensified further into a very severe cyclonic storm and is expected to move north-northwest. Over the next few days, Biparjoy increased in intensity and affected the arrival of the Indian monsoon. Just over a week later, on June 8, the monsoon reached the southern state of Kerala.

The National Weather Center has reclassified Biparjoy as Cat-2. The hurricane produced winds of up to 175 kilometers per hour.

Which countries are likely to be affected by Hurricane Bipajoy

Biparjoy has affected monsoons in India with a high tide in Mumbai. The National Meteorological Center assured residents that the cyclone will not affect the UAE in the coming days. However, cyclones forming in the Arabian Sea have affected the country in the past. Biparjoy is expected to strike the Indian state of Gujarat and southern Pakistan.

Biparjoy has intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm and is expected to make landfall between the Kutch district of Gujarat and Karachi on June 15.

India and Pakistan’s preparations

Pakistan has started evacuating people from the coastal area of Badin in Sindh province and moving them to safer places as Biparjoy approaches the area. About 2,000 people have been evacuated from Shah Bandar Island and about 50,000 residents will be relocated from villages such as Jati, Keti Bandar and Shah Bandar, Geo News reported.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called a review meeting this week and directed officials to ensure the safe evacuation of people living in vulnerable areas. Prime Minister Modi also asked officials to maintain all essential services and ensure immediate restoration in case of damage from the cyclone.
