Cylinder explosion sparks fireball at Abu Dhabi building

A huge fireball passed through a building in Abu Dhabi last night after a gas cylinder exploded – police fear a possible terror attack.

After two loud bangs in the city centre, the explosion started a fire and local residents were seen fleeing the scene.

Footage taken at the scene shows police and emergency services rushing to the blaze after conflicting reports of the explosion.

One witness wrote online: “Everyone was talking about the bombing in Abu Dhabi, it was right next to our hotel and it looked like it was on fire.

“But we definitely heard two explosions.”

The blast initially sparked concerns over Chelsea, who were pictured training in Abu Dhabi days before the Club World Cup.

The U.S. embassy in Abu Dhabi warned Americans about reports of possible missile or drone strikes in Abu Dhabi, without elaborating.

But the state-run WAM news agency later described the fire as coming from a gas cylinder explosion.

“Teams managed to bring the situation under control after extinguishing the fire and safely evacuating residents. There were no casualties from the fire,” a statement said.

“Cooling procedures are currently underway to minimise damage.”

The incident comes after Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched multiple attacks on Abu Dhabi, including recent attacks Three people were killed and six others were injured.

According to social media reports, one of the explosions occurred 12 miles from the hotel of the Brazilian football team Palmeiras.

The team beat Egyptian Al Ahly 2-0 earlier at the Al Nahyan Stadium.

A Brazilian journalist covering the game said he heard two loud bangs and could see smoke rising from the building. Brazil emergency report.

The city will host UEFA Club World Cup matches in the coming days.
