Czech Prime Minister Babis moves towards opposition after election defeat | Political News

[ad_1]

Prime Minister Andrej Babis, a populist billionaire, said he will hand over to a new coalition and turn to the opposition.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis (Andrej Babis) is preparing to hand over power to the opposition group that won a majority in the lower house of parliament elections last weekend, CTK news agency quoted him as saying.

Babis, the leader of the centrist ANO party, admitted that the opposition had won, but until Friday he still stated that he might still be the first to form a new cabinet and become the head of the largest single party in the parliament.

Babis said he would not accept an offer to try to establish a new government after his political campaign Narrowly win In last week’s parliamentary elections, and prepared to end in opposition.

“We will hand it over to the new alliance, and we will oppose it,” he said, and announced his decision in an interview with the Frekvence 1 radio station cited by CTK.

Babis’ decision opened the way for two coalitions of five parties that won a majority of votes.

On Saturday, a liberal-conservative tri-party coalition called Together won 27.8% of the vote and defeated the ANO (YES) party of Babis, which won 27.1% of the vote. A center-left liberal alliance won 15.6% approval rate, ranking third.

The two alliances have pledged to govern together. They are closer to the EU mainstream than Eurosceptic Babis.

Together they won 71 of the 200 seats in the lower house of parliament, and the center-left coalition won 37 seats, which will give their government a majority of 108 seats.

The Babis ANO won 72 seats, 6 fewer than the 2017 election.

President Milos Zeman Currently hospitalized, Has previously stated that he will first authorize the leader of the most powerful party, rather than the most powerful coalition, which will give Babis the opportunity to try to form a viable government.

However, Zeman, 77, has not commented on the matter since the election because he is being treated for complications related to undisclosed chronic diseases.

Given the lack of potential coalition partners, any Babis-led cabinet will almost certainly not win the necessary vote of confidence in the House of Commons, although this attempt may extend his term of office by several months.

The departure of Babis four years later will resolve the conflict of interest he is accused of being the founder of the agriculture, food, chemicals and media empire Agrofert, which he invested in a trust fund before becoming prime minister. He denied any wrongdoing.

The leader of Together, Petr Fiala, is a candidate for the new prime minister.

After the opening meeting of the new House of Commons on November 8, Zeman will have to accept the resignation of the outgoing government. Then he will have to choose the prime minister.
