Dake Rechsand, a Dubai-based company specializing in sustainable solutions for water conservation, rainwater harvesting and stormwater management, is presenting its Sponge City Initiative (SCI) at Wetex Dubai. The latest edition of Wetex, the region’s largest exhibition for sustainable and clean energy technologies, is scheduled to take place at the Dubai World Trade Center (DWTC) from 27-29 September.
The Dake Rechsand team, including CEO Chandra Dake and Dr. Yuming Su. PEDWRE, which is actively involved in several sponge city projects in China, will host an exhibition on this revolutionary concept. The presentation entitled “Sponge City: A Circular Approach Integrating Blue and Green Landscapes for Smart Water Management” will address solutions to flooding and related challenges in the context of the UAE and the greater MENA region.
“The region’s chronic water scarcity and recurring flooding find sustainable solutions in sponge cities—a concept that is advanced in China and has significance in a regional context. We have been Raising awareness of sponge cities in the MENA region, exploring partnerships for local implementation, and creating an impact-led ecosystem of stakeholders,” said Chandra Dake, CEO of Dake Rechsand.
Dr. Su is the deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Silica Sand Utilization and a member of the advisory board of several sponge city project organizations in China. He has over 20 years of research and engineering experience in water resources and stormwater management, particularly in the application of sand technology. Dake Rechsand has been active in promoting sand technology and related solutions such as Breathable Sand and IDer in Mena and beyond.
IDer is the main component of the sponge city, including porous materials such as bricks and curbs, laid on rain-exposed surfaces such as roads, playgrounds, and parking lots. During rain, the porous material absorbs runoff and keeps the surface free from flooding, waterlogging and slipping. As part of stormwater management, absorbed water can be redirected to appropriate drains or even stored in underground reservoirs. Thanks to the “breathability” of the surface, the stored water remains fresh for a long time without any external treatment.
