Damaged by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Mexico | News

[ad_1]

Seismologists say that the earthquake only occurred 7.8 miles (12.5 kilometers) below the surface, which would amplify the vibration effect.

A strong earthquake occurred near the beach resort of Acapulco in southwestern Mexico, causing rocks to fall and damage to buildings. One person was confirmed dead.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred 11 miles (17.7 kilometers) northeast of Acapulco Resort in Guerrero State on Tuesday night. The earthquake service department of Mexico measured the magnitude of 7.1.

The earthquake shook the hillsides around Acapulco, causing trees to fall and throwing large boulders into the road. The panicked residents rushed outside in the middle of the night.

Hector Astudillo, the governor of Guerrero State, where Acapulco is located, said that one person died after being hit by a pillar, but no serious damage has been reported.

Acapulco is located approximately 230 miles (375 kilometers) southwest of Mexico City.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said that there are no reports of major losses in the capital.

An eyewitness told Reuters that in the Roma Sur district of Mexico City, the lights were off, and frightened residents rushed out, some in pajamas.

Images posted on social media showed that residents gathered outside in the rain, holding young children or pets, because they were too worried to go home in the dark.

The photos released by the news agency also showed that buildings and vehicles were crushed by falling debris.

“It’s horrible. Every time something like this happens, I think of the 1985 earthquake,” said Yesmin Rizk, a 70-year-old Roma Sur resident.

The U.S. Geological Survey stated that the initial measured magnitude was 7.4. The earthquake was very shallow, only 7.8 miles (12.5 kilometers) below the surface, which would amplify the vibration effect.

Mexico is adjacent to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. It is located on the top of five tectonic plates, including three major plates.

On September 19, 1985, an 8.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in Mexico City, killing more than 10,000 people and destroying hundreds of buildings.

On the anniversary of that earthquake in 2017, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake killed approximately 370 people, mainly in the capital.
