Daniel Radcliffe found playing “Weird Al” Yankovic a “liberating” experience.
The 33-year-old actor takes on the role of singer in the new biopic “Weird: The Aryankovic Story,” but Daniel doesn’t feel any extra pressure in the role.
Daniel – best known for playing Harry Potter in the money-making film series – told the “Backstage” podcast: “It’s really liberating how different we’re playing people from our real-life counterparts.
“You know, if I left the set and it was a ‘serious Al’ biopic, I’m sure I’d watch Al every time and think, ‘Oh, is he okay with that?’ Like,” How about the moment we recreate? “
“But, you know, when I get off the table and relax with the machine gun, it definitely gives you a lot of clearance to go ‘we’re just doing something crazy and different’.
“I’d be happy if someone took me for a lunatic.”
There was a “very celebratory” vibe at the scene, Daniel recalls. The actor also liked the speed of the filming, calling it an “amazing” experience.
He explained: “It’s the fastest I’ve ever done. It’s amazing – so well prepared, you do feel like you basically have enough time to do everything and everyone is well prepared. Prepare.
“Everybody came in and realised pretty quickly, ‘Oh, we’re going to take two, maybe three. That’s the nature of it, you can’t take it too seriously’.
“The atmosphere on set was just…it really felt very celebratory all the time. No one on set was indifferent to Al’s work.”
