DAYTON, Ky. — Dayton community leaders want to make the city more attractive to tourists, as they recently announced plans to create an entertainment district in parts of the city.
“We want people to visit the city and frequent bars, restaurants along our downtown lines,” said City Executive Jay Fossett.
Earlier this week, the City Council met and approved an ordinance that would do just that, Fawcett said.
The ordinance would allow the creation of an entertainment district in Dayton — the part of the city where pedestrians can bring alcoholic beverages in approved cups and visit businesses located there.
The entertainment district will start at O’Fallon Avenue and extend along Sixth Avenue to Main Street, including parts of Berry Avenue and Monument Park.
Fossett said the entertainment district will be called The Rope Walk, a name that references some of the city’s history.
“We’re a town with a lot of history that used to be really a big manufacturer of steamboat products, and one of the things they made was the ropes that they used on the steamboats,” he explained. “These will be rope walks, basically three or four blocks long, and they’ll be putting cannabis together and rolling it all up to make a rope.”
City officials said the region’s launch date is tentatively set for sometime in late April 2023.
Drew Rath, who owns Tuba Baking Company, thinks this could be a good thing for business.
“I think it’s going to help everything along the way,” Russ said.
His business brings the flavors of the German Southwest to Dayton. He thinks their business will do well because of The Rope Walk entertainment precinct.
“We have a lot of German beer, German liquor, German wine and we want everyone to enjoy our fun, so we thought it would be great for them to be able to grab something across the street and come over with their family,” Russ said.
Fawcett said they have seen other local cities working on such projects. The goal is to make sure they attract people to the area and send some love to businesses in a safe, organized manner.
“What we were talking about that night in council was, let’s give it a try. If it’s an issue, we can always go back to the way we were,” he said.
Businesses that sell alcohol to customers who are visibly intoxicated could have their sales license revoked by the city, city leaders said. They also said they will work with small businesses to prepare for any and all changes brought about by recreation district ordinances.
