BAGHDAD (IraqiNews.com) – Dubai Ports World (DP World) on Monday launched the first direct cargo service between the United Arab Emirates and Iraq to facilitate the flow of goods between the two countries.
The service includes “unaccompanied freight”, in which trailers are transported on freight ferries without drivers and taxis traveling with the trailers. Instead, the trailer is left by the driver quayside in the port and pulled on and off the ship.
The service, the first of its kind in the UAE, is provided by P&O Navigation, a subsidiary of the DB World Group.
The service takes approximately 36 hours to transport trailers between the UAE’s Jebel Ali port and Umm Qasr port in southern Iraq.
The unaccompanied trailer was loaded onto the cargo ship without a driver and tractor in port.
Once the trailer is in Umm Qasr, Iraqi tractors can tow it to its final destination anywhere in Iraq. Upon arrival, the empty trailers were returned to Umm Qasr port and transported to Jebel Ali.
Goods transported by road from the UAE to Iraq must be transferred from their original trucks to local licensed vehicles, a time-consuming process that can leave the cargo damaged and contaminated, and threaten safety.
