DCD and FDF initiated initiatives to reduce early divorce rate

The Abu Dhabi Department of Community Development (DCD), in collaboration with the Family Development Foundation (FDF) and private sector partners, launched the pilot phase of the “Tegahwa” initiative.

The first such digital platform in the emirate aims to raise awareness of the importance of seeking professional help at the first signs of conflict to reduce the rate of early divorce in marriages.

The platform was designed based on the results of research conducted by the department, which showed that approximately 62% of Emirati couples in Abu Dhabi faced divorce in the first four years of their marriage, said Dr. Layla Al Hyas, Executive Director of Social Affairs. DCD’s monitoring and innovation department.

Al Hyas added that these studies also focused on the causes of divorce, including poor communication and conflict resolution skills, lack of quality time together, and delayed or unwillingness to seek marriage counseling.

“Tegahwa aims to provide support and guidance to couples who have problems with communication, understanding and conflict resolution. In addition, there are difficulties in raising children, which may lead to differences of opinion between spouses,” said Dr. Al Hyas. Tegahwa is The traditional Emirati word, rooted in authentic customs, means discussing important things and solving the challenges between the husband and wife and the two families. The pilot phase of the platform will be operated by family relations experts from the private sector, including under the supervision of the FDF, including Takalam Online Counlies, Yas Island and Maudsley Health.

Tegahwa provides a comfortable environment, guarantees confidentiality and privacy, and is tailored to the needs of couples. She explained that the platform incorporates innovative elements, such as personalized motivational text messages for couples based on couples’ data, and a reward system designed to strengthen family bonds by providing suggestions for various entertainment activities for couples and children to spend quality time together.

Tegahwa is the result of ongoing research work by the DCD, such as the Quality of Life (QOL) survey, which has now been released in its third edition, which helps to identify challenges facing the community and develop feasible solutions.

Wafaa Al Ali, Director of the FDF Family Guidance and Consultation Administration, said: “The development of the Tegahwa project in cooperation with DCD not only provides support and guidance for couples with communication difficulties, raises happy children, builds close families, and builds a community of high-quality life. “
