Deadly fighting breaks out between rival factions of South Sudan political parties | South Sudan News

[ad_1]

Earlier this week, rival Riek Machar denied that they had deposed him as the leader of the Sudan Liberation Army’s IO party.

His military spokesman said in a statement that deadly fighting broke out between rival factions in the SPLA-IO of South Sudan’s Vice President Riek Machar.

Clashes broke out on Saturday after Machar’s rivals announced this week’s dismissal of him as the leader of the party and its army.

The spokesperson, Colonel Ram Paul Gabriel, said that the armed forces led by the rival general Simon Gatwech Dual in the party launched an attack on Machar’s men and they “repelled The aggressor”.

He added that Machar’s SPLA IO troops killed two major generals and at least 27 “enemy” soldiers, while they lost three men.

The battle could not be independently confirmed, and Gatwech Dual did not immediately respond.

The leaders of the SPLM/A-IO military branch in Machar said on Wednesday that they had dismissed the rebel transferee who failed to represent their interests.

This battle could put pressure on the fragile 2018 power-sharing agreement between Machar and his arch-enemy President Salva Kiir.

On Friday, Machar’s allies refuted the attempt to remove him, calling it a “failed coup” and insisting that he still had complete control of the party.

Machar himself this week accused the “peacebreakers” of planning to remove him.

The 68-year-old is a cunning leader who survived years of jungle wars, failed in his life and went into exile. He joined Kiel in the first government after independence from Sudan in 2011. Served as Vice President.

But the two fell out and Machar was fired two years later. Troops loyal to everyone shot at each other, and South Sudan was plunged into a five-year civil war.
