Prince Harry described his mother’s sudden death in a car crash in 1997 as “a festering wound” in his life, while his older brother Prince William described it as “an agony beyond compare”. Princess Diana was separated from then-Prince Charles five years before the accident and divorced him for a year.

On her last day, Princess Diana was with her then-partner Dodi Fayed, 42, a film producer and billionaire owner of the Harrods department store The son of the owner, Mohamed Al Fayed, as described by Christopher Andersen in The Day Diana Died.

The couple arrived in Paris from Sardinia on August 30, 1997, after spending more than a week together in the Mediterranean. They were accompanied by bodyguard Trevoris-Jones as they left Dodi Fayed’s Paris apartment in a Mercedes-Benz driven by Henry Paul, the Ritz’s deputy head of security.

Paul and Dodi Fayed were killed at the scene when their car entered the Pont de L’Alma Tunnel when Paul lost control of the vehicle, which then struck the 13th pillar of the tunnel, causing a devastating collision.

Princess Diana was still alive when first responders arrived at the crash site.

“We lifted her out of the car, put her on a stretcher, and that’s when the doctor said she was in cardiac arrest. So we gave her CPR, and after 20 seconds she regained consciousness, we transferred her to the ambulance, A first responder later said, according to the Associated Press.

According to royal expert Christopher Anderson, the crash happened when some photographers were chasing the Mercedes-Benz on a motorcycle. According to reports, paparazzi remained at the scene of the accident after the car chase, filming the final moments of Diana’s life.

“I think one of the hardest things to accept is that the people who chased her into the tunnel were the same people who took pictures of her while she was dying in the backseat of the car,” Prince Haley told the BBC.

“William and I know this. People who know this is the case have told us many times,” he added.

“Instead of helping, those who caused the accident were taking pictures of her dying,” he asserted.
