Women’s Progress in the Entertainment Industry When I came into the company, the only managerial-level job available to women was story editor, which was a great job. But now women run studios and network executives and are involved in every aspect of the industry. There is still a lot of room for improvement, especially in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion, but we have come a long way. I also believe that in my lifetime a woman will be elected president of the United States.

In 1992, I co-wrote and produced Lively and fragrant At Fox, it was a fairly new network at the time, Wild West. In 1992, I worked on Billy Bathgate, my biggest struggle was surviving the never-ending money struggle with Disney. Despite the strong backing of a great director (Robert Benton), a stellar producer (Robert Colesberry), and a top-notch creative team, the film was woefully under-budgeted. Disney didn’t realize that the script was complex and had many sets and locations. The studio (and my supporters) are all male; I don’t feel like anyone takes my issues seriously. I still love this movie and am proud of it. If these things happened now, I would scream like a banshee. But they don’t happen because we have a much more open forum now. Then again, they don’t make movies like that anymore either.
