Derma Sotogake driven by Christphe Lemaire takes G2 UAE Derby
Japan-based Derma Sotogake found success in the Kentucky Derby (G1) as he took every step of the way in the Emirates Derby (G2) dominated by Japanese horses.
Trained by Hidetaka Otonashi, owned by Hiroyuki Asanuma, and ridden with great confidence by Christophe Lemaire, Chestnut won the Dura Erede 5 1/2 length challenge and ran approximately 1 3/16 miles in a 1:55.81 .
Continua is 4 1/2 lengths behind with another 3 1/2 lengths back to Perriere for fourth in 13 starts.
However, Derma Sotogake impressed enough to finish third in last month’s Saudi Derby, more than a mile away from his third.
The UAE is a qualifier for the Kentucky Derby, and Dema Sotojak has a 100-point entry in the Louisville Classic.
Trainer Otonashi confirmed that Derma Sotogake, a Mind Your Biscuits colt out of Neo Universe mare Amour Poesie, will indeed travel directly from Dubai to Kentucky for the May 6 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Racecourse.
He said: “This is my first time here and Derma Sotogake is my first runner. Now, I have a competitor and a winner – it doesn’t get any better than this!
“We didn’t exactly plan to go straight to the lead, but he broke the goal well. We expected him to improve and it went well, but you can never expect things to go that way. We had different jockeys and different venues, so You can never be sure how well it works, but it does.
“He’s going straight from Dubai to Kentucky. We’ll discuss it, but Christophe will probably keep it—he said he’ll keep it anyway!”
Jockey Le Maire added: “He can rest a little bit slower, so it was important that he started to use the gate on the railing well, which he did. He led the way and he let me loose in the back. He still moves smoothly for me in the closing stages, once I hit the button he’s impressive and I can enjoy his finish.
“I want him to go to America and I’d love to ride him there. How could anyone say no?”
