Dewa unit develops smart transmission pipeline to contain spills

[ad_1]

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) Research Center has innovated an advanced smart facility that can simulate various leaks in water pipelines.

The facility includes smart transmission pipes equipped with sensors to monitor hydraulic indicators, collect water pressure, flow and temperature data, and control an IoT platform that stores the data.

This data is used to train a machine learning model to detect leaks.

According to Dewa, this allows for the evaluation, development and testing of new leak detection technologies. Based on the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), the center developed the facility using software and hardware that allow comprehensive remote monitoring of the facility.

The facility includes smart transmission pipes equipped with sensors to monitor hydraulic indicators, collect water pressure, flow and temperature data, and control an IoT platform that stores the data.

This data is used to train a machine learning model to detect leaks. Based on experimental data using the facility, the developed algorithm was able to identify spill events with 94.4 percent accuracy.

Further experiments are underway to improve leak detection algorithms in water pipelines and test sensors.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and chief executive officer of Dewa, said the new facility reinforces its leadership and global excellence in reducing losses in water distribution networks.

Al Tayer affirmed the R&D center’s role in developing disruptive technologies for Dewa’s smart grid and fourth industrial revolution to deliver world-class services, improve quality of life in Dubai, and maintain the organization’s leadership in global utilities status.

“Dewa employs the latest technologies in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity and water networks. It applies global best practices across all projects to increase production and operational efficiency,” Al Tayer commented.

“Dewa has made major achievements in developing its water supply network to improve its efficiency and reliability and to increase water flow to keep pace with Dubai’s prosperity and provide service to over one million customers according to the highest standards of quality, availability, reliability and sex and efficiency.

Dewa’s performance outperforms major utilities in Europe and the US on several key performance indicators.

The line loss of the transmission and distribution network is reduced to 2.2%, compared with about 6-7% in Europe and the United States. Water distribution network losses have also been reduced from around 15% in North America to 4.5%. “

“Dewa has set a new world record for Customer Lost Minutes (CML) of electricity every year. Dubai has recorded 1.19 minutes per customer, while the EU’s leading utility has recorded around 15 minutes,” said Al Tayer.

Executive Vice President (Business Support and Excellence) Waleed Bin Salman said: Collaboration between the R&D Center and various departments in Dewa helps to test the technologies, patents and procedures developed by the Center and identify areas for improvement to achieve further positive results. “

“These innovations are also being tested in various labs at the centre, such as solar, IoT, robotics and drones, advanced materials and characterization, and additive manufacturing labs,” he added.-TradeArabia News Service
