The UAE Public Prosecution (PP) clarified the penalties for vandalism of public, historical, state and private documents set out in Federal Law No. 7 of 2008 on National Libraries and Archives through a video posted on its social media accounts on Monday. .
The UAE PP explained that according to Article 25, whoever intentionally destroys public, historical, state and private documents shall be punished with at least 8 months of detention and a fine of not less than 40,000 dirhams. Dhs100,000, or one of these two fines.
Prosecutors also stated that anyone who destroys, smuggles out of the country, copies or leaks the contents of confidential documents without permission shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of more than one year and a fine of more than 10,000 yuan. The same penalties provided for in paragraphs 1 and 2 of this article, depending on the category of the document, apply to a person who steals a document or obstructs access to a document by an enforcement officer of this law.
The prosecution added that penalties under this law shall not affect any more severe penalties under other laws. This is part of the UAE Public Prosecution’s ongoing efforts to raise legal awareness among community members and enhance their knowledge of the country’s latest legislation.
