Motorists operating illegal taxi services in the capital will be fined Dh3,000 and have their vehicles impounded for 30 days, authorities have warned.

In the latest statement posted on its social media site, Abu Dhabi Police warned of the dangers of illegally transporting passengers and the negative impact on their safety.

The police urge private car drivers not to engage in passenger transport activities without permission from the authorities.

Police are calling on the public to use approved and licensed taxis that meet international safety requirements and standards, and to cooperate in the fight against illegal transport to keep everyone safe.

In recent years, Abu Dhabi Police have reported that they have seized thousands of private cars after their owners were found transporting passengers from various Abu Dhabi roads to various areas.

Motorists were mostly caught by undercover police officers while picking up commuters in Abu Dhabi.

Police investigations have revealed that the vehicles that provide illegal taxi services are mostly owned by individuals, and sometimes the owners hire unlicensed drivers to operate the illegal services.

Police said the illegal carrying of passengers by private vehicles is considered uncivilized and has negative social, economic and safety impacts.

Colonel Mubarak Awad bin Mahirom, Director of the Department of Transportation Security, said Abu Dhabi Police, in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Integrated Transport Centre, has stepped up inspection activities to crack down on illegal taxis and catch offenders.

The fine for illegally transporting passengers is Dh3,000, the loss of 24 traffic points and the impoundment of the car for 30 days.
