Did you get this text message from the Abu Dhabi Police?

[ad_1]

Motorists in the emirate have reported receiving text messages reminding them of minor traffic violations, rather than fines, in a unique initiative by Abu Dhabi Police.

It was recently announced that a Dh400 fine will be imposed for driving below the minimum speed of 120 km/h on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road in Abu Dhabi. Police clarified that the restriction applies to the first and second lanes from the left, but does not apply to heavy vehicles. Slower vehicles can use the third lane if required, and minimum speed limits do not apply.

Authorities said warning notices will be issued to people who violate the minimum speed limit on designated lanes in April. Then, from May 1, fines will apply, they added.

Now that the rule appears to be in effect, people on this road who violate the minimum speed limit will indeed receive warning texts.

“We regret to inform you that you have been found guilty of [the] violation [of] driving below [the] Minimum speed limit in Abu Dhabi,” read one text message. “Your safety is our goal,” the text continued, adding that this is why violators are warned rather than fined.

“We hope you obey the traffic rules and we wish you well.” The text also specified the date of the violation and the type of vehicle the offender was driving.

However, this is not the first time this has happened. Abu Dhabi Police implemented the initiative last year, explaining that motorists would receive warnings for minor traffic violations, rather than fines. The authority issued more than 25,000 warning messages to drivers in the first half of 2022, noting that the initiative is an awareness-raising tool to remind motorists of the importance of complying with the UAE’s traffic laws.
