Digital magazines are baby-friendly entertainment solutions

When I was a kid, many mornings I would eagerly wait by the mailbox, wondering if we’d receive the monthly children’s magazine Highlights that day. Our grandparents gave us a subscription and I want to be the first to read this question before giving it to my younger siblings.

Last week, my daughter asked me if she could carry resources in her babysitting job to educate and entertain children while keeping them away from video games. When she asked me what I liked to do as a kid, “Highlights” immediately jumped to my mind.

I opened the Herrick District Library’s website: herrickdl.org and click on “Digital Library” and then “Only for Children”. Under “Children’s Magazines,” I perused the options.

“Highlights” is available, but special publications like “National Geographic Kids”, “Animal Tales”, “Britannica”, “Astronomy for Kids”, “Storytime”, “Brilliant Brainz” and “Coding for Beginners” and “All” Things are also available about History: Ancient Egypt. ”

A digital magazine is the perfect solution for this babysitting need. Digital copies won’t end up being chewed by teething children. Enthusiastic kids are eager to see what’s on the next page and don’t tear pages. In my daughter’s case, multiple issues of magazines for different age audiences can be downloaded onto one device, which she can share with multiple families.

HDL’s major digital library resources, Hoopla and Libby, both offer digital magazines. On Libby, magazines have no waiting lists or reservations, don’t count toward checkout limits, and offer readers the option to renew their selection. Readers can also download magazines on Libby for offline use.
