Digitalisation, electric vehicles are key drivers of change in travel industry

Several powerful megatrends — from the hyperconnected traveler to the arrival of electric air taxis — will have a huge impact on air travel over the next decade, forcing industry and governments to adapt quickly, according to a report.

That’s according to a new SITA report, ‘Meet the Megatrends’, which examines 12 emerging technological, social, traveler and economic trends that will significantly alter the travel landscape by 2033.

These megatrends do not exist in isolation, but rather operate in evolving ecosystems, with emerging technologies interconnecting trends and helping drive them forward. Data is at the heart of this ecosystem. Providers’ growing willingness to share data across the broader travel industry will help accelerate these trends even further and pave the way for the more connected, seamless travel experience passengers want.

Ilkka Kivelä, Vice President of Strategy and Innovation at SITA, said: “The air transport industry is at a post-pandemic crossroads, facing challenges from all sides. While the recovery in global travel accelerates, airports and airlines alike are struggling to deliver the seamless travel passengers expect experience, often in the face of layoffs and squeezed budgets.

“The climate crisis demands faster and more decisive action from industry to make tourism more sustainable. We now have the opportunity to reimagine the world of travel, connecting the dots through bold solutions across sectors and leveraging the latest technology Change travel.”

One of the key trends identified in the report is that Gen Z and millennial travelers are driving the digital transformation of the transportation industry, demanding a more integrated digital journey and accelerating digital lifestyles. Passenger privacy, digital identity rights and control will be priorities for passengers opening the door to a future in which we can travel from anywhere to anywhere without physical documents or being stopped for identity verification.

Another powerful trend is the automation and emergence of smart airports, which will reshape the workforce, generate new flattened business organizations, and streamline operations through technology.

By 2030, metaverse operations will be commonplace in leading airports and play an important role in optimizing processes, avoiding disruptions and facilitating intuitive, immersive controls for smart airports. This in turn requires new skills and creates new opportunities for industry employees.

At the same time, electric flying vehicles are expected to become ubiquitous at major international airports by the end of the decade, becoming an effective ancillary service and revenue generator for airports and airlines. Investment in the urban air mobility industry has skyrocketed this year alone, with $4.7 billion spent on developing eVTOL vehicles.

Ilkka Kivelä said: “These trends are shaping SITA’s own innovation agenda. We are excited to be working in many of these areas and look forward to working with our partners to drive positive change across the industry.”

Led by the SITA Lab innovation team, the report draws on insights from across the transport industry, SITA’s global research and the latest cutting-edge proofs of concept to identify the most powerful shifts that will drive tourism by 2033. trade arab news agency
