In this way, the visa application procedure in the Schengen area will become more efficient. Maria Malmer Stenergarz, Sweden’s Minister of Immigration, said: “The e-Schengen visa will make it easier for legitimate travelers to apply, while helping to make the Schengen area safer. Online applications will reduce the number of trips to the consulate for travelers and make the process smoother for national administrations.” .”

“At the same time, digital visas will eliminate the risk of forgery and theft of visa stickers,” the Swedish minister said.
The Minister informed that under the proposed rules, a new visa application platform will be established and all Schengen visa applications will be made through the same platform.

Visa applicants will be able to add all relevant data and upload an electronic copy of their travel along with supporting documents through the platform. After this, they will be able to pay the visa fee and be notified about the visa decision at a later date.
Only first-time applicants or applicants with invalid biometric data need to visit the consulate in person.
Visas will also be issued in digital format – a cryptographically signed two-dimensional barcode.
