NEW YORK (AP) — Health officials are warning people infected with monkeypox to stay away from household pets because the animals could be at risk of contracting the virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been developing recommendations for months as monkeypox spreads across the United States.
But it has drawn new attention after a French report on the virus in Italian greyhounds was published last week in the medical journal The Lancet.
The dog belonged to a couple who said they slept with the animal.
The two men contracted monkeypox after having sex with other partners and developed lesions and other symptoms.
The greyhound later developed lesions and was diagnosed with the virus.
Monkeypox infection has been detected in rodents and other wild animals and can transmit the virus to humans.
But the authors say this is the first report of monkeypox infection in domesticated animals, such as dogs or cats.
The CDC recommends that pets who have been in close contact with a symptomatic person should stay home and away from other animals and people for 21 days after the last exposure.
