Dominion sues American conservative news media over election charges | Business and Economic News

[ad_1]

Dominion, a voting machine company, sued conservative news outlets One America News Network and Newsmax Media, as well as the former CEO of Overstock.com, alleging its defamation was related to the 2020 US presidential election.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump failed to run for the White House in 2020, and his unfounded claims that he failed in the voter fraud contest continue to cast a legal shadow on the country.

On Tuesday, Dominion Voting Systems Corp, one of the largest voting machine manufacturers in the United States, sued the conservative U.S. news media One America News Network and Newsmax Media Inc and the former CEO of Overstock.com for the 2020 presidential election.

Dominion claimed that Patrick Byrne, the founder and former CEO of the two right-leaning cable news media and Overstock.com, slandered the company, falsely claiming that the company had transferred votes to President Joe Biden. Thus rigged the election of Trump.

Dominion is seeking more than $1.6 billion in damages from three separate lawsuits for loss of profits and other damages.

These lawsuits are the latest legal actions taken by Denver-based Dominion regarding the 2020 presidential campaign. The company also sued for defamation Fox News, and also Mike Lindell, CEO of MyPillow Inc, former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, And former Trump campaign manager Sidney Powell.

News media and individuals sued by Dominion for defamation have invoked the First Amendment right to freedom of speech in their defense.

In a statement reported by Reuters, Newsmax said: “Although Newsmax did not review Dominion’s documents, in its report on the 2020 presidential election, Newsmax only reported the allegations of well-known public figures, including the president and his advisers. And members of Congress-Dominion’s actions today are clearly an attempt to suppress such reports and undermine freedom of the press.”

Fox News’ legal representatives stated in a court document filed in May that the news media “must be able to report on both sides of the story involving our democratic core proposition.”

In April of this year, Newsmax apologized to Eric Coomer, a Dominion employee at the time, because he accused him of singly manipulating the vote count against Trump without evidence. Cuomo subsequently withdrew Newsmax from his defamation lawsuit.

Although state and federal officials found no evidence of voter fraud, Trump continued to falsely claim that the election was stolen from him.
