Donald Trump files $475 million defamation lawsuit against CNN World News

[ad_1]

Former President Donald Trump sued CNN on Monday for $475 million, saying the network defamed him to prevent any future political activity.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., centers on Trump’s “big lie” term for false claims about widespread fraud, which he says makes his 2020 presidency Lost to Joe Biden in the general election.

CNN had no immediate comment.

Trump’s repeated attacks on CNN for the presidency resonated with his conservative followers. He similarly filed lawsuits against Big Tech, with little success. His case against Twitter to remove him from the platform following the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riots was dismissed by a California judge earlier this year.

Numerous federal and local election officials on both sides, a long list of courts, former campaign staffers and even Trump’s own attorney general have said there is no evidence of election fraud he has alleged.

Trump’s lawsuit claims that CNN has used the phrase “big lie” with Nazi connotations to refer to him more than 7,700 times since January 2021.

“It’s designed to exacerbate, intimidate and trigger people,” he said.

In a statement Monday, Trump hinted at similar lawsuits against other news organizations. He also said he may also take “appropriate action” against a House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by his supporters. The lawsuit comes as he weighs a potential bid for the presidency in 2024.

According to several published reports, CNN’s new president, Chris Licht, privately urged his news crews at a meeting more than three months ago not to use the term because it came too close to a Democratic effort to brand the former president. .
