We often promote the many forms of entertainment that can be found everywhere in San Francisco, from the Grand Opera House to small independent theaters, but seldom do two weeks make our point so clearly.We’re drawn into Rhino Theater’s complex character studies and civil rights struggles Homesickness Guide Crowded in a small space of just 30 spectators and two engaging actors.We were immersed in the beautiful music performed by the SF Gay Men’s Choir at Davis Symphony Hall Disney Pride Concert, Includes incredible soloists and passionate personal stories.We admired the dazzling musical talents and stage skills Trixie Carr in the oasis for her cannibal hall and ates Homage, a true testament to the power of women in drag.Our Sneak Peek at Oscar Night Jane Val at the Academy, and then watched the Hollywood broadcast that weekend, also at the Academy, in a hospitable environment, by Katya Smirnov-Sky And surrounded by friends. This should prove the point! Don’t forget, all of these opportunities will only continue if we, the audience, participate and support them. Let’s put COVID in the rearview mirror and get out and enjoy all that San Francisco has to offer!
In addition to these entertainments, we also found ourselves immersed in grassroots fundraising.The American Legion’s 448 Post (the only LGBT post in the country) hosts a vintage beer bust on the 440 st patrickOne day we joined Gary Virginia Raise it to a full-blown celebration of all things green. Attendees were amazed by the humorous Irish themed awards, and even our costumes and musical performances paid homage to the ubiquitous green. The next day, Krewe de Kinque held their monthly fundraiser, raising $600 with their popular prank at Midnight Sun. The King and Queen announced the details of their upcoming 20th Anniversary Ball at The Cafe on April 15th from 6pm to 9pm. The subject is “415,“So get ready to celebrate all that San Francisco stands for! Call out for Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence Sunday at The Edge’s fundraiser.” Host Mark Paladini There is a raffle in the middle, which keeps the entertainers’ performances going briskly. Performer tips, raffle ticket sales and other donations totaled more than $1,300 in a few hours. Yes, a carnival weekend in the Castro can also demonstrate community support and important fundraising efforts.
this san francisco bay times Gives us an amazing public vehicle to share our experiences in San Francisco social circles, especially the LGBTQ+ community which we love so much. Additionally, our editor/publisher was very gracious and helpful, allowing us to move on to other topics and topics when needed. In the face of the recent national attacks on Drago, we can no longer remain silent.
As anyone who reads this column regularly can attest, San Francisco is full of Drag, welcoming it in all its iterations across the city, and our public life here is largely a proud member of the Drag community. We’ve probably known every significant drag character in San Francisco over the decades, and we continue to meet new people every week. None of them pose any threat to children, or American greatness, or anything like that. Drag is just one of the most recognizable faces in the LGBTQ+ community, and as such has become a target for those unhappy with the tremendous progress our community has made over the past few decades. Our enemies want to reverse every advance we’ve made, including job and housing equality, marriage rights, legal protections, and every fundamental aspect of dignity that’s been fought hard and won. To them, it’s not so bad if we have our little ghettos of gay bars and businesses, our private clubs and personal fetishes, and even our public parades, as long as they stay within the confines of their preconceived notions of decency Inside. But when a man puts on clothes, even emerges the essence of the opposite sex, speaks with wisdom and commands attention, the flag is raised and the battle begins.
when Jose Sarria Once told such a story: When he was wearing drag, a small piece of paper that said “I am a man” was pinned to his clothes to protest the state law prohibiting wearing the opposite sex in public. intent to deceive, We couldn’t believe it. We cannot believe that such a law ever existed. We couldn’t believe his ingenious solution. We still can’t believe this is a problem.
Let’s be clear: there are times and places where underage children are inappropriate. Many times this is obvious, indicated by identity checks, signage and common sense. Sometimes, the decision rests with the parents, which may be to supervise or limit attendance. But Drag has always been a beautiful part of the city, and its presence is no more a threat to others than wearing a hat. Drag expresses who we are, and in our 30 years of ups and downs around the Bay Area, we’ve gotten far more praise than disapproval. When this disapproval arises, candid dialogue has many times built a bridge between seemingly opposing parties.
Whether purely for entertainment, comedic or otherwise, or to convey a message of immediate or more profound significance, Drag gives us the opportunity to do a lot more than we ever imagined possible. San Francisco welcomes us with open arms, and we will continue to be committed to this beautiful place rich in diversity. The blatant attack on Drag will soon be seen as another dastardly attempt to undermine the strength of the LGBTQ+ community, split our unity, and insult self-expression. never. not here. not now.
