Police injure dozens of people in Lebanese capital Conflict The protesters demanded responsibility and justice for the devastating explosion in Beirut’s port last year.

On Wednesday, a scuffle broke out between riot police and stone-throwing demonstrators in downtown Beirut, not far from the main event commemorating the first anniversary of the tragedy.

The protesters started a fire and tried to rush into the parliament headquarters. Members of the parliament headquarters were accused of delaying investigations into the disaster. In response, riot police fired tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons, and urged “peaceful protesters” to leave.

Soon after, Lebanese television appeared to show a tank driving into the area.

The Red Cross sent 21 ambulances and 100 paramedics, saying that it had taken 8 people to the hospital and treated dozens of people on the spot.

Shortly after 6 pm on August 4, 2020 (15:00 GMT), stockpiles of ammonium nitrate fertilizer randomly stored in the city’s port exploded, and a large area of the Lebanese capital looked like a war zone.

One year has passed and no senior official has been held accountable. Domestic investigations have not yet resulted in major arrests, and the culprit has not even been identified, and political leaders have been widely accused of obstructing justice.
