Drones hit Ukraine’s capital Kyiv on Monday – for the second time in a week

Central Shevchenkivsky District UkraineEarlier on Monday, the capital was hit by bombings for the second time in a week, with Mayor Vitaly Klitschko saying several residential buildings were damaged.

“Rescue crews are at the scene,” Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging service, adding that a non-residential building also caught fire as a result of what he said was a drone strike.

There is no immediate information on casualties.

The Shevchenkivskiy district, a busy center with universities, student bars and restaurants, was hit by multiple bombings last Monday, when Russia ordered its largest aerial attack on the Ukrainian city in retaliation for a bridge linking mainland Russia to Crimea explosion occurs.

Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to the Ukrainian president, said the attack was carried out with a so-called suicide drone.

“The Russians think this will help them, but such behavior is just their convulsions,” Yermak said on the Telegram messaging app.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has reported a spate of Russian attacks using Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones. Iran has denied supplying the drones to Russia, while the Kremlin has not commented.

Russia has denied targeting civilians in what it called a “special military operation” in Ukraine.
