Abu Dhabi and Dubai are still reportedly the most liveable cities in the Middle East and Africa, thanks to a mass vaccination campaign against the Covid-19 pandemic that has made them two of the safest cities in the region, and The first urban Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) to recover from the pandemic.

The EIU said the vaccination campaign helped the country “avoid a total lockdown in 2021 and so far in 2022”.

“Abu Dhabi and Dubai have largely remained open since the first wave of 2020. Their relatively quick recovery is one of the reasons why these two cities are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively,” it said in its latest report .

In June, the UAE completed vaccination of all target groups against Covid-19.

Dubai was one of the first major cities in the world to reopen after the pandemic. Stringent policies imposed by authorities helped contain the pandemic and reopened cities for businesses earlier.

Due to the high level of trust in both emirates, Dubai Airport handled 7.12 million passengers between January and June, while Abu Dhabi Airport handled more than 6.3 million passengers. Earlier this year, Dubai’s population also crossed the 3.5 million mark for the first time.

After these two emirates, Tel Aviv, Kuwait City and Bahrain were named the most liveable cities in the region. The least livable cities were Damascus, Lagos, Tripoli, Algiers and Harare.

Cities in the Middle East and North Africa scored an average of 58, while sub-Saharan Africa was the least liveable region in the world with a score of 50.
