Two well-known business leaders in Dubai have jointly launched a global initiative to end the use of “blue collar” as a way of referring to manual workers in various industries.
Dr. Harmeek Singh, founder and chairman of Plan b Group, one of the largest event management companies in the region; and Alok Gadkar, MD and executive creative director of a partnership advertising company, recently launched BeyondBlue, a global dialogue The project aims to eliminate the term “blue collar” workers and only use “industrial workers” or “skilled workers” when referring to people working in this field.
The project was launched during the recently concluded Vie Fashion Week, where real-life workers walked on ramps in blue overalls, but their collars were modified to visually represent the changes called for by Singh and Dr. Gadkar.
“For many years, we have been cooperating with the industrial workers department through our Hope Box project to provide various forms of assistance to this underserved sector in our community. Working with Alok and his team in Partnership, we are considering increasing the dialogue Go to the global level and call for identifying our industrial workers in a more dignified way,” Singh said.
Gadkar hopes that the initiative will keep people away from discriminatory terms related to color. “Like many of our industrial workers often do, doing an honest day’s work cannot be defined by the color of their collar. In fact, because many of them are involved in the construction and operation of many enterprises, this kind of work is eliminated. Color-based identities bring a sense of pride to their profession,” he added.
Limited-edition work clothes will be sold, and the proceeds will be used by the BeyondBlue team to promote the global call to stop using “blue collar workers” and contribute to the welfare of industrial workers.
Singh and Gadkarchose used the UAE as the launch pad for this cause. The UAE has about 2.2 million skilled or industrial workers, but they plan to start a dialogue on a global scale. In addition, they will raise funds to launch related projects to benefit workers by selling limited edition blue work clothes launched during the fashion event.
