The force urges parents to educate their children not to build friendships with strangers

Dubai police arrested a man who tried to blackmail a young girl on social media. Authorities stated that he was arrested within 24 hours of receiving the report.

Abdullah Khadem Bin Suroor, chief of the brig Bur Dubai police station and chairman of the police station board committee, said the force received complaints through the Smart Police Station (SPS).

According to reports, after winning her trust, the suspect used the photos and videos the girl sent him to blackmail her.

“However, the Dubai police intervened in time and arrested the man within 24 hours of receiving the report,” Brig said. Bin Suluer said.

He explained that cyber-extortion is an emerging form of cybercrime. If victims do not pay them the requested money or force them to conduct illegal activities, criminals will threaten to release private pictures, videos and confidential information.

The Bur Dubai police chief urged parents to educate their children not to accept requests from friends or establish friendships with strangers.

“Parents must educate their children on the dangers of sharing their photos and information through websites, social media platforms and video games, and instruct them on how to act when they fall into the trap of extortion,” he added.

The brig Bin Suroor explained that the blackmailers used multiple methods. “The most prominent method is to use fake accounts on social media platforms to lure people to share their photos and videos with criminals-criminals then use these private information to blackmail victims.”

The authorities urge the public to be vigilant when using social media platforms and not to provide personal and sensitive information, including pictures and videos, to anonymous or suspicious accounts, as online blackmailers may use this information.
