Since its launch in 2009, the mass transit system has experienced nine milestones on its way to milestones

Dubai Metro has transformed the emirate’s public transport system in more than 13 years, reaching 2 Billion Passenger Milestone.

The first billion milestone was achieved eight years later, while the second billion milestone was achieved in just six years, reflecting the popularity of the subway as an efficient mode of transportation for passengers. By contrast, subways carry nearly the population of the United States, India and Pakistan combined.

Due to its growing popularity, the subway added new stations and features to handle the increase in ridership.

Here are nine key milestones Metro achieved on its way to the milestone:

— The government announced the launch of the metro in the early 2000s, and tenders were launched in 2004-05, with multiple global consortiums bidding for the mega-project.

— Construction work on the region’s first driverless subway began in March 2006 and was completed on time, with the opening of 10 stations on the Red Line. Even during the 2008 financial crisis, work on the project continued.

— On the unforgettable day of 09.09.09, the driverless subway started running, while the whole city watched in awe as it opened. The Metro was inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

— The Green Line opened in September 2011 with 18 stations and a total length of over 23 kilometers.

— For the record: It is one of the most advanced and longest driverless rail systems in the world.

——In 2017, subway passengers exceeded the 1 billion mark, and the eighth anniversary was fully loaded with 1.028 billion. The Red Line carried approximately 689 million passengers, and the Green Line carried 339 million passengers.

— The Naming Rights Project for Dubai Metro is a world-first public transport infrastructure revenue model and the first project of its kind to help improve transport services through collaborative funds raised through the Naming Rights Initiative.

— Line 2020: As part of the Expo 2020 development, the Metro Red Line was extended in 2015 and named Line 2020. It was done before the Expo. The track starts from Jebel Ali Station and connects Gardens, Discovery Gardens, Al Furjan, Dubai Investment Park and Expo 2020.

— The Nol card, originally launched for subway users, has been expanded to allow cardholders to use it to shop at various outlets. The Nol Pay app has also been launched to provide smooth and seamless payment services to the public.
