Dubai Municipality recently retrieved approximately 820 tonnes of marine debris, including nine wooden boats and commercial vessels, from Dubai Creek. This effort marks the initial phase of the Municipality’s annual strategy to clean and preserve the sustainability of water canals across Dubai.
The Municipality diverts an impressive 95 percent of waste to recycling businesses. Saeed Abdul Rahim Safar, Director of Waste Operations Department at Dubai Municipality, confirmed the ongoing implementation of the first phase of their water canal hygiene plan, covering various locations such as Dubai Creek, Vessel anchor area, Jaddaf, Dubai Water Canal, Business Bay Canal, and the Waterfront.
Safar emphasized the strategy’s importance in removing marine waste that obstructs boat and vessel movement, disrupting trade and tourism traffic, while also preventing marine pollution from hazardous industrial products and substances that pose risks to marine life and fisheries.
The success of the strategy is ensured by the involvement of significant partners from both the public and private sectors. Notably, during the first phase of cleaning operations, the Municipality’s team has already removed three ships and boats this year.
