The stepmother used severe punishments, including forcing the girl to eat chili, beating her, and keeping her in the bathroom for a long time.
The Dubai Police and forensic psychologists have joined forces to solve crimes against children, including a 5-year-old girl tortured to death by her stepmother and a newborn baby murdered by her stepmother.
Captain Mohamed Suleiman, deputy director of the Department of Forensic Psychology, affiliated with the Dubai Police’s General Directorate of Forensic Evidence, said that the department uses advanced scientific procedures when accepting testimony from children.
Case of a 5-year-old girl being tortured to death
According to a forensic report, the girl died after multiple injuries, including severe beatings on the head and other parts of the body.
Suleiman said that the case had no real impact. The only witnesses were the girl’s two sisters, aged 9 and 7. Maid; and father.
“The prosecutor asked us to verify the accuracy of the children’s statements,” he said.
To this end, forensic psychologists studied the psychology of the two girls in depth and ensured that no suggestive questions were asked to help guide them to find specific answers.
Suleiman confirmed that the statements of the two girls were accurate. They explained that their stepmother was a resident of the country and would use severe punishment when their late sister made a mistake.
The stepmother beat the 5-year-old girl, covered her mouth with her clothes, forced her to eat chili, and locked her in the bathroom for a long time.
The maid confirmed these testimonies, and the father admitted that he knew the punishment, but did not interfere.
After questioning her stepmother, a psychological evaluation was conducted, which confirmed that she was aggressive, irritable, and angry.
Newborn murdered by mother
A pregnant maid concealed her pregnancy from the owner, gave birth to the child, choked the child with a piece of cloth, and threw him into the trash can.
During the interrogation, Suleiman said that psychologists tried to determine whether the maid had a mental illness or was affected by the delivery environment. But psychological tests showed that she knew everything she had done and was found guilty.
The Department of Forensic Psychology cooperated with the Ras Al Khaimah Public Prosecutor to solve the case.

Suleiman said that the public prosecution agency will usually ask to verify the accuracy of a person’s statement, and the department will make an assessment based on their mental abilities.
“Psychological autopsy” of suicide cases
The Department of Behavior and Personality Analysis also conducts a so-called “psychological autopsy” on people who have committed suicide.
The autopsy aims to determine the cause by recreating the psychological state of the suicide.
