A 26-year-old woman with severe Covid pneumonia successfully delivered Covid-free twins in a Dubai hospital.
Filipino Mariecen Nituma Agillon started experiencing Covid symptoms such as fever, cough and shortness of breath when she was 31 weeks pregnant. As the symptoms worsened, Agillon became nervous and worried because it was her first pregnancy.
She rushed to the NMC Specialist Hospital in Al Nahda, Dubai, where she tested positive for Covid-19 and was taken to the isolation ward of the hospital for treatment. Her husband, Kenneth Zamora, also tested positive at about the same time and was sent to the quarantine center of the Dubai Department of Health.
On admission, the doctor gave her seven liters of oxygen to maintain her blood oxygen level. Blood tests showed severe infection and inflammation, chest X-rays showed bilateral pneumonia-take appropriate lead shielding precautions to minimize radiation exposure to unborn children.
Covid tested positive again
Dr. Rakesh Sankar, Chief and Specialist at the NMC Specialist Hospital in Al Nahda, Dubai, said: “Pregnancy can lead to complications of Covid-19, and in this case, it is even more so because it is a premature delivery of twins. Except for Covid pneumonia and acute Respiratory distress syndrome. Other complications she encountered during treatment included severe anemia requiring blood transfusion, bacterial pneumonia due to sepsis, and high heart rate (150-160bpm) suggestive of thyroid disease.”
After spending two days in the intensive care unit of the hospital, nine days in total in the hospital, led by a team of experts in internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and intensive care, Aguiron was finally discharged after obtaining a health certificate. PCR test was negative. However, she was admitted to the hospital again the next day due to premature delivery. Shockingly, she tested positive for Covid again.
Dr. Praveena Saraf, a specialist obstetrician and gynecologist at the hospital, said: “Generally speaking, twin pregnancy is considered high risk and may lead to premature delivery. Although Aguiron’s weight is only about 50 kg, the new crown virus infection has increased her premature delivery. risk.”
Dr. Saraf and Agillone successfully performed an emergency caesarean section and delivered two 32-week-old premature girls weighing 1.4 kg and 1.6 kg respectively. After taking intensive care and preventive measures to ensure the safety of the babies, their Covid-19 test results were negative, even if their mother was positive.
Karvendhan Ramasamy, a neonatal specialist at the hospital, said they encouraged Agillon to breastfeed her newborn. “Although this mother was positive for the new coronavirus, her breast milk was expressed to the baby from the first day. We can still use her breast milk because it is safe for a Covid-19 positive mother to breastfeed her baby. “Ramasami said.
Since both Agillon and her husband were Covid positive, their premature baby was treated in the neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital and was finally discharged two weeks later.
Agillon expressed her happiness and gratitude to the hospital. She said: “During these difficult times, the dedicated teamwork of all doctors has achieved positive experiences and results. My husband and I can only pray, but God seems to pass these doctors. Responded to our prayers.”
Agillon and her baby were discharged from the hospital two weeks after the delivery date.
