Dubai South and Evocargo launch driverless truck trials

[ad_1]

Dubai South on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Evocargo to launch the UAE’s first autonomous vehicle trial for freight in the logistics zone of the main development.

The Wam news agency reported that from December to February 2023, Evocargo’s driverless electric delivery vehicle EVO.1 will be tested in the logistics area in South Dubai.

A key objective of the trial was to enable Evocargo to modify and redesign the EVO.1 specifically for the MENA region. During the trial period, remote operators will be stationed at the control center to manage the platform on-site. Located in the logistics district of Dubai South, the center includes a software suite to monitor the operation of the EVO.1, check the maintainability of the sensors and identify any errors.

Mohsen Ahmad, CEO of Dubai South Logistics Zone, and Andrey Bolshakov, Founding CEO of Evocargo, attended the MoU signing ceremony. Dubai South is the largest single city development in the emirate, focusing on aviation, logistics and real estate. Dubai-based Evocargo is a logistics service provider that develops and delivers electric autonomous transport platforms.

Dubai is a global logistics hub with unparalleled cargo capacity and connectivity. Perfecting electric and driverless truck technology for the region will help further reduce its carbon footprint and strengthen the city’s green credentials.

Unlike other cities and countries that have only focused on enabling autonomous private vehicles, Dubai’s autonomous transport strategy is multimodal, covering all seven modes of public transport, including metro, tram, bus, taxi, sea , cable car and shuttle bus. When fully implemented, the strategy will help reduce transport costs by 44% or AED 900 million, save AED 1.5 billion by reducing environmental pollution, and save AED 18 billion by increasing the efficiency of the transport sector by 20%.

Ahmed said: “We are delighted to enter into a strategic agreement with Evocargo to launch the UAE’s first autonomous trial, setting new global benchmarks and cementing the country’s leadership in the logistics industry. In addition to improving operational efficiency, our partnership It will also help to scale and sustain supply chain operations. At the Logistics District, our mission is to support the industry and accelerate the UAE’s fast-growing logistics sector.”

The unmanned platform has a lifting capacity of 2 tons, can hold up to six EUR pallets and moves up to 200 kilometers at a speed of 25 km/h. Charging the vehicle for a full day takes anywhere from 40 minutes to six hours, depending on the outlet.

The safety system of the EVO.1 platform is divided into four layers: computer vision of the space around the vehicle, automatic diagnostic system, remote stopping system and backup pneumatic braking system.

The efficient fleet management of the EVO.1 autonomous driving system increases freight efficiency while significantly reducing truck downtime. Robotization and the use of electricity and hydrogen fuel cells instead of traditional fuels offer cost benefits.

Evocargo has 37 protected inventions and technologies. Evocargo’s patents cover algorithms for visual localization, automatic mapping algorithms, calibration and integration of sensors and cameras, methods for selecting safe speeds, and parameters for dynamic models.
